Sunnah of drinking water.
Assalato wassalamo alaika Ya Rasool Allah
Wa ala alika wa ashabika Ya Habeeb Allah
Insha Allah Azzawajal today’s study circle will be on the Sunnah way of drinking water.
The Messenger (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasalam) liked sweet cold water. The Messenger (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasalam) never made a noise whilst drinking water and when He Sallallahu Alayhi Wasalam would drink milk, shurbat (milk shake) etc. he would give other first then take himself.
My dear Islamic Sisters! A common thing that can be seen nowadays is that people drink whilst drinking up. This should not be done as it is khilaf e Sunnat meaning against the Sunnat.
Abu Hurairah (RadiAllaho Ta’ala Anho) narrates that “Once the Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasalam) saw a person drinking whilst standing up, the Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasalam) asked him to vomit it back out”. The person asked why, “Why shall I vomit it out?” The Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasalam) said, “Surely who drank with you is worse then cat, that is the devil”. (Madarijun Nabuwat)
Meaning my respected sisters that when we drink whilst standing up the devil is drinking with us!!
Abu Huraira (RadiAllaho Ta’ala Anho) narrates from the Messenger (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasalam) that “Do not drink water standing up, if you do it by mistake and you remember then vomit it out”. (Muslim)
Hadith:
My dear Islamic sisters! To drink water standing up is makrooh (disliked) but it is desirable to drink the water of ablution standing up and also the Holy water of Zam Zam as this is Sunnah. We should not drink water in one breath as Ibn Abbas (RadiAllaho Ta’ala Anho) narrates from the Messenger (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasalam) that “Do not drink water in one breath like a camel. However, drink it in two or three breathes. Say Bismillah and when you move the glass praise Allah Azzawajal by saying Alhamdulilah”. (Tirmidhi)
The way the Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasalam) drank water was by holding the glass in his Blessed right hand. He would sit down and pray “Bismillah”. My dear Islamic Sisters the method of drinking water is to take it in three small sips by sucking the water without making any noise and moving the glass away from the mouth each time and praising Allah Azzawajal each time by saying “Alhamdulilah”. So that is before taking the glass to the mouth recite Bismillah take a sip and then remove the glass from the mouth and recite Alhamdulilah. This should be done twice and in the third sip you should drink as much as required.
Hadith:
What we tend to do whilst having a hot drink whether it be tea, coffee, hot chocolate is blow on it to cool the drink down. This should not be done as Ibn Abbas (RadiAllaho Ta’ala Anho) states do not breathe or blow in the water. (Or any drink no matter if cold or hot). (Tirmidhi)
My dear Islamic Sisters! Science also proves that when one blows in a hot drink, the bacterium increases in the drink. These bacteria you will drink and will increase in the stomach, as there is warmth and this will create more illness in the stomach.
The supplication to be recited after drinking water is:
“Alhamdulillah hilladhi saqana adhbann furotann birrahmatihi walam yaj’Alhu milhann ujajann bidhunoo binaa” (recite 3 times and get sisters to repeat it)
Translation: “All praise is due to Allah who has given us fresh sweet water through His mercy and did not make it salty and bitter due to our sins”.
In conclusion the manner of drinking water is:
•Pray “Bismillah” and drink with your right hand as the devil drinks and eats with the left hand.
•To sit down and drink.
•Drink by taking three separate sips not all at once.
•Whilst drinking, suck the drink and do not make a noise.
•Do not blow into any drink for cooling.
•Say “Alhamdulilah” after drinking.
•It is not permissible to throw away any left over drink. Always cover the water that is left in a glass, jug or pot
